This site was created to easily navigate through common natural hair categories. At the Kitchen Salon, you can search for anything pertaining to natural hair in the side bar; you can submit your photos and hair stories; learn about natural hair events; study our locked hair guide; and watch natural hair videos on TKS TV.

HAIR: Articles about hair styles, tutorials, little known hair facts and haute hair tips.

HOW TO: Tutorials and photo demonstrations of how to create various styles on natural hair and locs.

MY JOURNEY: These are blog posts about my own locked hair journey, including unforseen issues and styling attempts.

More notes: Kitchen refers to not only the place within a home or building where food is prepared, but it also refers to what African American Culture describes as the hair nearest the nape of the neck  (aka “the kitchen” whereby the hair is often gathered together in small “balls”. Likewise, it has been the natural practice that people gather in the kitchen of the home to eat and talk about everything from children, to shopping, to beauty.

A salon is a gathering of people under the roof of an inspiring host, held partly to amuse one another and partly to refine the taste and increase their knowledge of the participants through conversation. These gatherings often consciously followed Horace’s definition of the aims of poetry, “either to please or to educate” (“aut delectare aut prodesse est”). Salons, commonly associated with French literary and philosophical movements of the 17th century and 18th centuries, were carried on until quite recently, in urban settings, among like-minded people.
